Conditioning & production

The instrument is built. Now make it sound like you.

Voice building makes a voice capable. It does not decide what the voice should sound like on a record, in a room, or in a role. That is a different craft, and it belongs to someone who has had to make that decision on their own voice, in their own booth.

01 · Foundation

Voice Building

Strength and coordination in the muscles that make the voice: larynx, vocal folds, pharynx, soft palate, tongue. Range, pitch, power and a bridge that holds. The same system for every voice and every style.

02 · Shape

Voice Conditioning

Once the instrument is capable, shaping it for the job: the tone, colour, texture and edge a particular song, room or role needs, and finding it on demand. This is where a teacher who sings makes the difference.

03 · Record

Vocal Production

In the booth with recording artists: pre-session conditioning, take-by-take tone shaping, matching the voice to the track, and keeping the voice healthy through a record or a tour.

Why the builder and the producer are usually two different people.

Most voice builders do not sing. They can make an instrument strong, and that is real work. But they have never stood in front of a microphone with a producer waiting, and had to find a tone that sits inside a track. And most vocal coaches never built a voice: they teach phrasing, presence, repertoire and style on top of whatever instrument walked in, and hope. Coaching is interpretive. Building is structural. Conditioning is where they meet, and it only works when the builder can also hear tone the way a singer and a producer hear it.

What conditioning changes.

Your essential tone never changes. Everything around it can: colour, texture, edge, weight, warmth, breathiness used on purpose instead of by default, where the vibrato lives, how much of the bottom you bring to a chorus and how much air you leave on a verse. Conditioning is targeted work on a capable instrument so that you can produce a specific quality on demand, in the right key, at the right dynamic, on the fiftieth take as well as the first.

In the booth.

Vocal production sessions are for artists in active recording. I condition the voice before the session, shape tone take by take, keep the instrument healthy through the day, and listen like a producer: for the take that serves the song, not the one that shows off the range. Sessions are booked in blocks, in the Beverly Hills studio or remotely alongside your producer and engineer.

For working voices, actors and speakers the same approach applies: a speaking voice that holds for a two-hour session, a dialect that sits on a built instrument instead of a constricted one, a tone that does not quit in the afternoon.

Building first. Production second. You cannot teach a voice to reach for a note it does not have the muscle to hit, and you cannot shape a tone that the throat cannot hold. Both are muscle. One is foundation, the other is finish.
