Tiziano Lugli
Thirteen years. Seven of the best teachers in the world. None of it worked.
I went from the Opera in Milan, La Scala, to the great teachers of London, to all the celebrity teachers of Los Angeles. Trust me, I tried them all. Around fifty thousand dollars later I had a voice that was almost beyond repair, and a lesson every student of those studios eventually learns: the words do not connect to anything you can move. "Sing from the diaphragm." "Place it in the mask." Not one of them is an action.
What finally worked was a muscular, anatomy-first approach to building the instrument, the one the early Bel Canto masters seem to have reached by direct observation before it was slowly replaced by metaphor. It rebuilt my own voice. I learned it, mastered it, and have taught it one-on-one for 30+ years, from my first students found through a few blunt classified ads to the recording artists I work with today.
In parallel I kept singing. I was signed to Warner Music Italy as an artist, and I have released 28 singles of my own since. As a songwriter and producer I have written and produced records for other artists through my company, Xstatic, and I produce vocals in the booth for artists in active recording. That is the part most voice builders cannot offer: they do not sing, so they cannot condition a voice for a record or tell you what it should sound like on one. I can, because I have to do it for myself every time I make one.
I am also a celebrity photographer and director in Los Angeles. That work lives at tiziano.net.
